UEFA has announced the postponement of the Euro from 2020 to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The new start date for the European football championship IS June 11, 2021. the Final match is scheduled for July 11. As a result, the summer of this year was unloaded as much as possible, so that the continent had time to finish playing football Championships and European club tournaments – the Champions League and the Europa League.
When the decision was made
17.03.2020 G. UEFA held an online conference with the participation of the heads of football federations. The main issue on the agenda is the transfer of the Euro From 2020 to 2021, which was threatened with disruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, it was decided to hold a football tournament from June 11 to July 11, 2021. This option will allow completing the national Championships before September 1, 2020.
The date of March 17 has already entered the history of sports, since similar status sports events were canceled only because of world wars. The UEFA decision was not unexpected. The fact that the Euro will be moved to 2021 was discussed from the first days of the month. Formally, this is a postponement, but de facto a cancellation, since there is no 100% guarantee that the tournament will definitely take place next year. In addition, there is a conflict of interest between UEFA and FIFA due to the club world Cup, also scheduled for the summer of 2021.
What were the options
Initially, UEFA considered the option of transferring the Euro To the end of autumn 2020. The specific period of the tournament was called: start-November 23, end-December 23. In this case, the football Championships of the countries would have to make a window in the calendar and go on a winter break in the fall. On the other hand, the European leagues should already pause in November 2022, due to the world Cup in Qatar. But football officials did not approve this option of transferring the Euro, considering that the summer of 2021 is a more acceptable time.
Consequences of the transfer
Earlier, many media outlets reported that if Euro 2020 is postponed to 2021, new expenditures of 300 million euros will be required. The need for additional money is related to the preparation of cities and signing agreements with sponsors. UEFA intends to shift the costs to the football leagues of the countries, although officials have already begun to optimize the distribution of funds. For example, even before the official announcement of the postponement, hotel reservations in Copenhagen for functionaries and the Danish national team were canceled.
There are other negative consequences in the decision made:
- Additional financial losses for hotels, tour operators, airlines and other representatives of the tourism industry, which are already on the verge of bankruptcy due to the epidemic.
- UEFA is forced to postpone the Summer Champions League.
- Disruption of the 2021 club world Cup in Shanghai-the tournament has already been postponed, but the exact dates have not yet been announced.
- The final of the League of Nations, scheduled for June 2-6, 2021, will also not take place. Today, the question of the expediency of holding the tournament as a whole is being considered.
- The European championship next year will look strange. During the year, the composition of national teams can change significantly, i.e. the right to participate was obtained by some players, and others will go.
What to do with football and flight tickets
You don’t have to worry about football tickets. UEFA will fully cover the costs if the fan is not satisfied with the option of keeping the pass until 2021. Stadium ticket holders should get all the necessary information by email. These data are also available on the official CHE portal: euro2020.com/tickets.
Air travel is more difficult. Carriers will refund the full ticket price in case of flight cancellation or illness of the buyer. Now it is difficult to predict, but by the beginning of summer 2021, all restrictions may be lifted and the airline may refuse to refund the full cost of the travel document. UEFA will not be able to challenge such decisions. Passengers should study the refund procedure themselves or contact the airline’s representatives.
An alternative option is to expect that the governments of countries will oblige carriers to return money for tickets, if their owners do not come to fly to the tournament in case of stabilization of the situation. Such a development is unlikely, but it should not be completely ruled out. Another solution is to accept the absence of football during the holiday, but not to give up the rest completely or change the ticket to another destination.
