Cucumber is one of the main vegetable crops that is consumed both fresh and in pickles or preserved, but the yield of this agricultural plant will be low without meeting the deadlines for planting seedlings or in a greenhouse. To correctly determine the timing of sowing in 2021, you need to take into account several basic rules that are known to agronomists, but are not always available to novice gardeners.
What does the landing period depend on?
In order to correctly calculate the landing time, you must take into account the following significant factors::
- agronomic recommendations to the overall plan;
- adjustments for the growing season of the variety and the nature of fruiting (early -, medium-or late-maturing);
- climatic characteristics of the region;
- data from the lunar sowing calendar for gardeners.
General recommendations remain stable from year to year, so many generations of agronomists and gardeners who grow cucumbers for their own needs are guided by them. The timing in this case is calculated in accordance with the biological characteristics of the crop. It has been studied that the best period for transplanting cucumbers into a greenhouse or garden beds is when the plants are 20-30 days old after germination.
It is during this period that seedlings have a high life potential, which allows them to protect themselves from stress after changing places, reduce the natural pause in development and minimize the risks of death at the time of adaptation. At an earlier age, a small number of transplanted cucumbers will be taken, and if they are significantly late, the growth pause will be long, which will significantly reduce the total volume of the crop obtained.
The average time for planting cucumbers in a permanent place is as follows:
- in the greenhouse – from 20 to 30 April;
- in the open ground under the film or agrofibre – may 10-20;
- open ground – after June 10.
To correctly determine the periods of sowing cucumbers, you need to take into account the stages of crop growth. The development of seedlings occurs according to the following scheme:
- soaking of seeds;
- the first shoots appear in 7-10 days (at an average temperature of about 20°C);
- the first real leaf will appear in a week;
- development of each next sheet — at weekly intervals;
- the appearance of buds – at the age of 30 days.
Based on this scheme, you can easily calculate that the sowing of cucumbers should occur approximately 40 days before planting in a permanent place.
That is, the terms of sowing for seedlings will look like this::
- to the greenhouse – first half of March;
- in the open ground under the film-the first decade of April;
- on open beds – the first decade of may.
These dates are optimal. They take into account not only the temperature, which is necessary for normal development and fruiting, but also the length of daylight. If you sow seeds earlier than the specified time, the sprouts will not have enough light, and they will grow with long internodes, will get sick and will not transfer well. In addition, the fruiting of such cucumbers will be 2-3 times lower than the average varietal norm.
The time of planting depends on the category of the selected type of cucumber: early-maturing, medium or late. The development of early varieties and hybrids is usually faster than that of other varieties. This information is important if the recommended sowing time is missed. A gardener who sows seedlings for a greenhouse or garden bed with a delay, and even when using a late variety, risks losing the harvest.
Since each variety or hybrid of cucumbers has specific characteristics, it is impossible to know all of them. The best advice is to use the tips shown on the back of the seed bag. Usually they write information about the time of planting seedlings and in the open ground, about the time of transplanting cucumbers into the greenhouse and on the beds, as well as about the duration of fruiting.
However, you can only focus on the specified time frame if the seeds are sown for the first year. Further re-pollination may occur, and the varietal characteristics will change slightly next year.
Despite the fact that cucumber is an unpretentious plant, its seedlings are very sensitive to two temperature factors:
- the air temperature;
- the temperature of the soil.
For normal development, the air must meet the indicators of at least 14°C, but the most important thing is to make sure that the ground temperature is above 10°C. That is, even if the weather is very warm, you need to make sure that the ground has already melted and warmed up to acceptable values.
All the mentioned dates are indicated for the middle lane. In the southern regions, the spring heat comes earlier, so cucumbers can be transplanted into the greenhouse in early April, and in the open ground-in early may. Accordingly, the sowing time for seedlings will also move forward for a couple of weeks.
In the Northern regions, on the contrary, agricultural activities start with a delay, so here sowing starts a week or two later than the average time.
In addition to this data, you should also take into account the weather forecast for the next weeks after the transfer. Sudden frosts can damage all the plants, and after the efforts made in vain to grow seedlings, you will have to buy new plants.

Lunar sowing calendar
If all the previous planting factors remain standard every year, then even professionals who are engaged in growing cucumbers in large volumes and have tremendous experience are checked with the lunar calendar.
Lunar cycles really affect the physiological processes that occur in plants. Seedlings sown on the appropriate dates are resistant to diseases, show a faster rate of development, tie more buds and give a good harvest.
The lunar calendar for 2021 provides such information on planting and growing cucumbers.
|March 2, 3, 4||Soaking of seeds|
|March 14, 15||Soaking of seeds|
|March 17, 18, 23||Landing|
On March 1, 5 and 29, any work with seedlings and in the greenhouse is undesirable.
|April 1, 3, 5, 8, 9||Soaking the planting stock|
|April 13, 14, 15||Landing|
|April 18, 19, 20, 22||Pickaxe|
|April 24, 25, 26||Soaking the planting stock|
|April 28th||Planting, transplanting to a greenhouse or garden beds|
On April 11 and 12, any work with seedlings and in the greenhouse is undesirable.
|May 2||Sowing, transplanting in the greenhouse or in the garden|
|May 3, 4||Pickaxe|
|May 5, 6||Sowing, transplanting to a greenhouse or vegetable garden|
|May 8, 9, and 10||Pickaxe|
|12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26 may||Landing, transfer|
There are no unfavorable dates for gardening work in may 2021.
Taking into account all the factors considered, it will be possible to grow viable cucumbers that will perfectly bear fruit both in the greenhouse and in open ground conditions.
